Packt Publishing Releases Geospatial Book from NVision

November 21, 2013 - Birmingham, UK
Learning Geospatial Analysis with Python

Packt Publishing recently released "Learning Geospatial Analysis with Python" written by NVision's Chief Operating Officer, Joel Lawhead. The book is available in both print and eBook editions from Packt's website (www.packt.com) as well as major book retailers including O'Reilly Media, Amazon, and Barnes & Noble. A direct link to the book is available here: http://goo.gl/ViwEJo

The book focuses on geospatial analysis including GIS and Remote Sensing using the popular Python programming language. Geospatial analysts have used Python for over a decade, however use of the language has grown in recent years with nearly every commercial and open-source geospatial package now offering a Python application programming interface (API).

The book focuses on using pure Python solutions as much as possible without relying on third-party libraries. This approach allows development of GIS solutions using Python easier on emerging IT platforms including mobile devices and cloud-based systems.

"I wanted to write a book based on topics I researched over the years as well as feedback from readers of my blog," said Lawhead, "Much of the information consolidated in this book is difficult if not impossible to find on the web. The examples takes advantage of the ease and power of Python to tackle difficult geospatial analysis challenges."

Lawhead based much of the book on short articles published over the last five years on his blog GeospatialPython.com. But the book also expands on the blog articles by going deeper into Remote Sensing and processing elevation data. The first chapter includes a detailed history of geospatial analysis.
