NVision Tracks Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill through Satellite Images

May 2, 2010 - Bay Saint Louis
April 21, 2010 - This map shows the plume of smoke after the platform accident. The oil spill has not spread at this point.
April 29, 2010 - The oil spill has spread out considerably and is easily visible in this satellite image.
May 1, 2010 - Despite the cloud cover, the oil spill is quite visible and the sheen area is spreading away from the areas of thick oil.

NVision Solutions, Inc. has produced a series of maps showing the location and extent of the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.  Using imagery collected by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA's Terra and Aqua satellites, NVision is able to digitize the extent of the oil spill.  In addition to the map series, NVision has created an animation of the map series to show the progression of the oil spill over time.

The following dates are included in the map series: April 21 (the day after the platform accident with the platform visibly smoking in the imagery), April 25, April 26, April 27, April 29, and May 1.  Gaps in the dates of the map series are due to the satellite imagery containing too many clouds to see the oil spill.
